Hands-On Centre

At The Dr. Mariano Elia Hands-On Centre, you'll find art-making and creative play activities for the whole family, from our youngest learner on up! We always have fun in the Hands-On Centre: art-making, constructing, storytelling, costume play, making new friends and exploring. Listen to a story, dress up and act out the story, play a game or make a little storybook yourselves. Programs change frequently and are exhibition based, and our team of facilitators is ready to support creative family learning time together. This summer, the AGO’s Dr Mariano Elia Hands-On Centre is the place to be where children of all ages can create their own animal shadow puppets, bringing them to life behind a shadow puppet theatre. This summer’s activity, with its emphasis on animals and storytelling, is inspired by two current AGO exhibitions, Tunirrusiangit: Kenojuak Ashevak and Tim Pitsiulak and Connecting With Our First Family.

Our newly refreshed Dr. Mariano Elia Hands-On Centre also includes a new art installation, Doors in the Deep, by Labspace Studio. The installation showcases animals seen in artwork throughout the AGO that you can find using our new Arty Animals family self-guided tour (find it at the Art Carts or the Dr. Mariano Elia Hands-On Centre).

Located on the concourse level of the Gallery in the Weston Family Learning Centre.

Admission to the Hands-On Centre is included in your General Admission ticket, or free unlimited admission with your family membership.
